I think the thread title sums it up. Hope he gets disciplined.

One thing I picked up on was the reporter mentioning the cops salary. Has nothing to do with the incident, didn't need to be 'reported'.

I don't know if I should be laughing at the stupidity of that, or to just be disappointed at how the police act. Every year there are multiple police men going out of line...

I hate all the "Stupid pigs" people. You say that till you need their services then it's all "OMG! THANK YOU OFFICER! YOU SAVED MY LIFE!" Just like there are bad doctors, bad plumbers, and bad priests, amazingly enough there are bad cops. However there are just as many if not more good ones.

To all police out there: Thank you for doing the thankless job dealing with the dregs of society. Stay sane in a world of horrible crap. Stay safe.

As for the story in question: 911 should never hang up on someone. They should ALWAYS try to get to the bottom of whatever is going on at the other end of the line. People (mostly) call the service because there is an emergency. They should have ignored the low class person and gotten the information and sent the emergency services. Once at the scene the police can shut her up after determining what's wrong and taking care of that.

Both parties involved were idiots.

In a perfect world people would watch their language when talking to others and operators would ignore any outbursts and get to the important stuff such as "Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How"

Hmm, on this thread only one person said that, and that was only referring to that one officer.

I think that's just stupid. If someone needs an ambulance, they don't need to be hung up for swearing. Sure, curse words aren't the best thing to use, but they've developed into the vocabulary of a lot of people, and I'd be surprised if even half of them only use it when they're annoyed. The last thing it should cost is a life.

The Police did act extremely irresponsibly, but the guy did ask her not to swear, and she kept on doing it. It was still no reason for the Police Officer to give up on an Emergency Call. Perhaps if the girl had just opened with the line "My dad's having an seizure on the floor" it might have been handled better.

This is a prime example of why giving the wrong people a little bit of power is a very bad thing. The American Police certainly, to me, seem like one of the most hostile. This video only just goes to illustrate that. It's like they just go all out in trying to defend what is "right", "true" and "pure" that they just take it all a little too far. I'm sure that a lot of it has something to do with the culture of suing everything with a pulse. The people at the top will filter down responsibility, through the ranks, keeping themselves free of all blame. Finally, when that responsibility hits the "ground forces" they completely overreact at everything, since the "buck" stops with them.

There has to be some flexibility in Emergency situations. You can't expect people not to panic, and by extension, not to swear. So long as the phone operative isn't the one being verbally abused, I see no actual problem.

You know, it's easy for us to say "Oh, you idiot, you shouldn't have talked so fast and say f*ck*!". But remember the last time you were under a lot of stress, or the last time you panicked.

That's why it's called "PANIC". Because person is too stressed to be thinking rationally. It's logical to swear a lot, especially if you don't know what to do when someone is seizing or whom to call.

And hanging up 3 times, then ARRESTING THE GIRL WHILE HER DEAD IS SEIZING should be punished... Come on, 3 lives were almost screwed over (the girl, her brother and dad) because of one idiot on the phone.

I don't think it's "logical" to swear. Moreover, she clearly did know whom to call. If you swear a lot normally, then yes, you might "jump to swearing" when the first thing you do is call someone in panic. If her brother was present, why did he not try calling after his sister was hung up on a couple of times? I'm not in any way "on the side" of the Police here, but after being hung up on twice I would have taken the hint that I should probably just not swear at the overpowered moron.

Then again, I probably am smarter than the average bear to begin with, which is maybe why I don't fully comprehend.

As much as I hate the culture of suing, I really do hope she took the guy to court and gave him the judicial hiding he so badly deserved, and then the same for his boss. If nothing else, lasting examples must be made out of these sort of people as a warning to others not to be so completely idiotic and unfeeling in future, and if necessary, to force a change in policy.

would you? really? that's odd because i'm pretty sure getting hung up on twice while her dad is having a seizure put her into an even more crazed state since she couldn't get the help that she needed.

other than that, i totally agree with you - if you answer 911 calls, especially if it's NOT your first day on the job, it should come as no surprise that people cuss on the phone. that dude needs to get off his high horse and quit being so sensitive - what's he doing with a job like that anyway??

Police officer are not tighty widy nice people either. Regardless of what their job stands for, all it is its their JOB. But regarding the woman i would definetly not freack out as much as her but i would deffinetly swear off on the phone. Now that i think of it i once called 911 because my grandmother had a problem with her fake teeth and was choking, i am pretty sure i let out couple of f-bombs at the operator and did not got hung up on OR sweared back to. In any case if you work with publick you should be expecting such situations. Id have a big coversation wiht the guys manger and sue his ass for the poor job he does -_-

I don't think you would. If you are panicking and your dad is having a seizure and the police refuses to hear you out AND calls you an ass I would be pretty damn angry. Unless you are an extremely calm person you probably would be too.

It has, unfortunately, become "logical". As much as I hate swearing, I think the guy commited a serious professional mistake and, if normal disciplinary are followed, he'll be fired, maybe with a compensation due to circumstances (it's strange that he had past commendations).

At least the girl is out of jail and her dad is ok.

The Police Officer should know that leading by example is the best way forward. It's fair to say that by insulting her, he may well have been "asking" for her to continue as she was. Still. There's a time and a place. Panic or not, MY first priority would be to get an ambulance to my dad as soon as possible, so a quick apology from me and straight back to the point would have been my preferred route, just to tide things over. When my dad was picked up, and I was feeling calmer, THEN would be the time to go to my solicitor's / police ombudsman and get backsides kicked.

But that's just me...

I know. "Panic this" and "panic that", but at the end of the day, arguing with a police officer who just "thinks he's right" is never going to get you anywhere. I'm sure she would "never have thought of that" given the "state" she was in, and that will be the excuse. This world, unfortunately, is all about cheap shots and point scoring. Something most Police forces have down to a "T".

Was it a Police Officer you spoke to? My suspicion is that the guy very badly confused "extreme situation" with "normal life". If someone swore at him in the street he probably would be justified in doing something about it. He just took "keeping the peace" to a whole new level and it completely backfired on him.

Though I've never had the misfortune of having to call 999 in the UK, I'm fairly sure the Emergency Call centres are staffed by people who do try to understand emergency situations, and are trained in extracting information from even the most panicky of callers.

that officer s**t head just deserves to be shot for acting like that in such a situation. When i hear someone, obviously in panic, is calling an ambulance i think there may be a cost of life in game - and i dont care about some stupid swearing then

The officer can't really make a point of not swearing if he calls the girl an ass. I mean honestly, I don't know if I would be swearing during the call in that situation, but I would definitely be swearing. You could tell be her tone of voice that she was panicking and it was extremely serious. The cop shouldn't have hung up on her at all, even if she was directly insulting him, which she wasn't even doing. In fact, hanging up was the worst thing to do, because I would take swearing as a sign that she really needed help, urgently.
